Record Associates were appointed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to provide Construction Project Management services in connection with the redevelopment of their nature reserve at The Wolseley Centre, nr Rugeley.
The project involved the reconfiguration of their existing accommodation in order to create a new, welcoming entrance and car park, a new shop and 60 cover Kingfisher café and restaurant overlooking the nature reserve.
Externally, the car park was upgraded, seating areas added and a new bridge created over the canal to integrate the visitors centre with the reserve and Swan Lake to the rear.
The car park works were procured under a separate, parallel contract in order to provide better value for money and complete the works within a tighter timescale. This involved careful co-ordination between the two construction teams so that the centre and reserve remained accessible and safe throughout the works.
“The project was really exciting for Staffordshire Wildlife Trust who were keen to generate new income in order to promote and fund the great work they do. The development was particularly challenging as it was undertaken on a live operational site so it was vital that the works were undertaken safely with the minimum of disruption to the Trust’s day to day activities. The works also involved the co-ordination of three main packages; the car park works by Roy Beech Contractors, the main works by Sutton Coldfield Construction and the kitchen fit out by Catering Centre UK. The results are stunning and the Trust are now enjoying increased visitor numbers to the centre and income generation well in excess of forecast” says Julian Record who was the Project Manager for the Trust.
The works were completed in May 2019 marginally behind programme and close to their £750,000 budget.
